There are very few true legends in body building and Lou Ferigno is surely one of them. In the 70s, he was a real rags to riches tale as he escalated from a modest background to global fame in body building and to even more fame in his acting in the classic TV series THE INCREDIBLE HULK as the green monster. Most humans may be conscious of Fergino and his work. But not galore know his background and this may prove very interesting even to the people who don’t follow body building.

Early Years

Lou was born deaf in Brooklyn, a suburb of New York, United States in the 1950s. Lou became a little withdrawn and detached because the attitude towards deaf people weren’t in truth progressive at that time. He started weightlifting as a sparetime activity in his teens and became obsessed with it. He worked out each day and watched his diet religiously. He set his sight on competing in a good deal of novice competitions for body building. He entered and performed so well in them that he caught the eye of Joe Weider, the body building mogul. Joe brought Lou to professional body building competitions. Though Lou did genuinely well his new profession, he disunited his time amid it and working in a construction company as it remunerated him far more than what professional body building did! Lou became featured in PUMPING IRON, a classic documentary, a documentary which brought him the attention of a good deal of a Hollywood producer.

The Hulk

During the introductory days of shooting for HULK, former James Bond movie villain Richard “Jaws” Kiel bombed and Ferigno was called to play the leading role of the green goliath. Very few believed that the series would turn into a genuinely suberb hit. But it became a colossal hit and lasted lots of years on network and cable TV and decades together in syndication. Ferigno was a bona-fide star worldwide!

Ferigno is well into retirement and doesn’t compete in body building competitions these days. He however, appears at a heap of body building competitions as a judge and as a special guest. He also signs numerous autographs at respective comic conventions and keeps in touch with almost all of his fans who have eagerly followed his career allround the years. Speaking in terms of history of pop culture, Lou Ferigno is surely one of a kind and a unfeigned icon!

4An Above-Average Book on a Difficult Subject
By CB
Let’s get this out of the way first – “Incredible Comic Book Women” is not the only book you’ll ever need in order to draw comic book women well. No single such book exists.

Okay, now that we’ve cleared the air, “Incredible Comic Book Women” is probably the best book out there specifically dealing with how to draw the women of comics. Christopher Hart has written a book on the subject (How to Draw Great-Looking Comic Book Women (Christopher Hart Titles)) and other books (like How to Draw Fantasy Females: Create Sexy Cyberpunks, Seductive Supergirls, and Raunchy All-Action Heroines, Draw & Paint Fantasy Females, and How to Draw Those Bodacious Bad Babes of Comics) all have their good (and, unfortunately, mostly bad) points, but ICBW (as I’ll refer to this book from here on in) is unique in that it takes its time in trying not only to teach you some of the basic and intermediate techniques, but it also has some great bits helping burgeoning artists recognize what they might be doing wrong, which is very important.

The book has 3 parts, each divided up into a series of segments:

Part 1: Drawing Crash Course tries to be a basic drawing fundamentals tutorial, covering gesture, face, hair, body structure, etc. The most helpful areas here are the “Gesture Sketches” and “Hair” sections – they teach some aspects of those difficult subjects that actually helped light bulbs go off in my head. The rest of this section offers similar content to Andy Smith’s excellent DRAWING DYNAMIC COMICS, though, of course, this book focuses on women. The anatomy section in ICBW, however, are super helpful in that Nguyen’s examples are drawn in positions and angles that will be most helpful to the artist – he actually draws the difficult 3/4 views of figures, which many books don’t cover well or omit altogether. His discussions of the figure and body parts in perspective is not technical and I think will help greatly.

Part 2: Advanced Techniques offers discussion on using models as reference, drawing facial likenesses, drawing differing ethnicities, aging characters, clothing and accessories, and inking/coloring. Most of the lessons here are superficial, though the section of drawing a likeness is a good supplement to the excellent Secrets to Drawing Heads, which is highly recommended.

Part 3: Assignments shows him take a drawing of a comic book style woman from the conceptual stage all the way to the finish. These are well done, largely, and good for those trying to figure out the process of drawing. Especially helpful is one section which discusses how to draw clothing that had shiny areas on it, something very common in comics today. I’ve only ever seen on other book (Draw & Paint Fantasy Females) cover this topic at any length, but it can’t touch Nguyen’s analysis here, which will really make it seem easy.

The Good: In addition to a number of needed tutorials and examples, Nguyen, following in the footsteps of his last book, Incredible Comics with Tom Nguyen: The Ultimate Guide to Creating Kick-Ass Comic Art, shows us what not to do, often imitating the styles (and mistakes) of familiar comics professionals (who he doesn’t identify by name. Season comics readers will get the joke, though…) in order to make his point. I tend to find these eye-opening, and they often point out what I’ve been doing wrong and couldn’t figure out.

The Bad: Some parts of this book just don’t work as well, or were done better in other books. While this book is certainly worth getting if you’ve got some experience under your belt, it’s not good for the beginner. Additionally, judging by some of the content in this book, I would say it is meant for older artists, not for kids.

5Incredible How-to Book
By Jacob Booth
Incredible Comic Book Women with Tom Nguyen is the most comprehensive and helpful how-to art book I have ever purchased. It is an immense help to me, being an aspiring artist these past years, but a lot of his tips would be excellent for beginners as well.
He covers all facets of creating kick ass comic chics, from anatomy to facial structures/expressions, to different styles of clothing and hair, and everything in between. He even goes in depth on chapters that deal in lighting, photo-reference, and layouts.
I especially enjoy the assignments section of the book. Working through them, and reading his advice as you progress, I feel is an invaluable tool.

I highly recommend this book. I cannot think of a better book to help an artist, be they Pro or beginner.

5well worth the investment
By curtis m
I had bought Incredible Comics with Tom Nguyen at a local bookstore and initially bought the book because it had a chapter that dealt with how to draw women, well when i found out he had another book out that dealt specifically with drawing the female anatomy, I had to have it! Toms books are easy to read and give valuable instruction on how to approach its subject matter. Incredible Comic Book Women absolutely put my drawings on another level. For years I struggled with drawing women, trying to maintain thier proportions, maintaining a correct anatomical manner and most importantly….MAKING THEM LOOK BEAUTIFUL ! After reading Toms book and following his instruction and tips, my drawings have improved immensley ! I have always wanted to be able to capture the beauty of the female body as well as some of my comic illustrating heroes, John Buscema, John Romita, and Jim Lee are a few who come immediatley to mind. With Toms help I am well on my way. I can draw good looking babes now and I enjoy doing it. Its almost like i found a new toy! Thanks Tom I hope you’re reading this because I am a satisfied customer!
